8 Best Travel Items for a Solo Trip

Nothing can beat the experience of traveling alone. The experience one gain, the insight one obtains and the change it brings in an individual is hard to explain and can’t be described in words.

The fun part, you can steer yourself in any direction you choose and you are the one who will decide where you want to go, without waiting for the other person.

That being said, equally important is to travel comfortably and safely.

All things considered, below are some of the items that should be included in the luggage when traveling alone:

1. Portable charger

Keeping friends/family updated about your whereabouts is crucial and should be done on a daily basis when traveling alone. As a solo traveler, staying out of reach of family/friends is a complete no-no, it can be dangerous too.

Some places might not provide wifi service and rely on mobile data can be dicey. Similarly, finding a charging point everywhere, might not be possible. With this in mind, for a safe trip one definitely needs to carry a portable charger all the time.

Moreover, if you are active on your phone, tablet all day, clearly you require a portable charger everywhere. For safety reasons, you must bring a portable charger in your carry-on.

2. Offline Maps

Often times on a trip you will be exploring new places on your own (without guide or help). In such events, offline maps are quite helpful and especially when mobile data is out and down. Since, having access to cell data while traveling overseas is often complicated, slow, limited and expensive. Also, offline maps are necessary to navigate the way in case you lost track.

Alternatively, click the picture from your smartphone before or download the map for a particular destination in advance so that you can use it without having data or wifi. That way you can still use it to get directions.

The only downside is that you won’t get local traffic reports, cycling, public transport, or walking directions without a connection, but can still see where you are on the map in real-time.

3. Earplugs/Headphones

The basic idea of using earplugs is not to disturb others in the room. Another advantage of using them is to prevent unpleasant air pressure during landing and taking off in an aircraft.

Whereas it also protects against some uncomfortable situations: when people around are irritating and annoying. It transforms into an amazing tool, saying DND (do not disturb). In other words, it’s a polite way of saying, I’m busy and not interested in talking to you.
Isn’t it great?

Therefore, it is never harmful to keep a couple of them in the luggage. Put one in carry-on and others in checked luggage for a relaxed trip.

4. Convertible clothing

For stress-free travel, always travel light. It helps in packing up quickly. Also, it becomes easy to move around without waiting for someone’s help.

Clothes and shoes that can be worn both in the day and evening and in different ways are the best to carry.

For example:

✔Convertible pants that can be worn full length for the evenings and like a short in the day time.

✔Shoes that can be worn with different outfits,

✔Clothes that fit perfectly and comfortably whether you are on the go or relaxing in the hotel,

are some of the examples of the best clothing and footwear to carry in the luggage.

5. Backpacks

A backpack is a must-have for a solo traveler. However, not of any brand, only a good quality such as Wildcraft, Herschel, Samsonite and so on.

The reason not only they are light in weight which makes it easy to carry around but also can fit lots of stuff as they are exceptionally well made.

It will be light on your shoulder and easy to go around, making the trip stress-free.

On the other hand, local backpacks can save you some money, as they are sold at a lower price than branded bags, yet it will not serve the purpose. They are bad in quality, wouldn’t fit many things and feel extremely heavy on the shoulders.

At the same time carrying such a bag would be risky. The quality is difficult to rely on and you would surely not like to spoil the trip, right!

6.Reusable plastic food bags

For smoother and a comfortable trip, carrying reusable plastic food bags is another useful item for a single traveler.

Using plastic bags for packing items such as toiletries, beauty products e.t.c. will make the luggage lighter. Also, one can store open leftover food and reuse later. The food stays fresh and will not take much space as well. Hence the trip will be tension free, non-loaded.

Quite a practical and efficient item to have in solo traveler luggage.

7. Prescribed drugs

In other countries, standards of safety, hygiene, and medical care may vary from the country you live in. These differences can severely affect your health and your ability to access medical aid abroad.

Don’t plan on being able to buy your medicines at your destination. They may not be available, and if they are, they may not meet the standards. In many developing countries, counterfeit drugs are a major problem.

Pack smart and put your medicines in your carry-on luggage. If you lose your suitcase, you don’t want to be stuck without them. Bring enough medicine to last your whole trip, plus a little extra in case of delays, as stated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Bring copies of all prescriptions, including generic names for medicines.

Leave a copy of your prescriptions at home with a friend/ relative in case you lose your copy or need an emergency refill.

Pack a note on letterhead stationery from the prescribing doctor (preferably translated into the language understood at your destination) for controlled substances, such as marijuana, and injectable medicines, such as EpiPens and insulin.

8. Carry-on luggage

Another essential item is carry-on luggage, a must, even if you are carrying checked baggage. Sometimes baggage is misplaced and reaches by the next day. In that event, it’s always good to have all the basic items in hand. Always better-being cautious.

Again carry always a good quality bag for an unconstrained trip. Since a quality suitcase is made of premium materials and generally involves a rigorous, comprehensive manufacturing and quality control process.

Moreover, a good quality carry-on will provide enough space for all the stuff: laptop, camera, some clothing, shoe, toiletries e.t.c
